October: Frank discusses the recent market pullback. Is this something to worry about?

Yesterday, I opened the Business Section of my Sunday newspaper to be hit with the headline “How Bad Can It Get? Some Wall Street pros are sounding an alarm: This could be much worse than a regular correction.

Of course, I’m well aware of the market movements of the past 30 days, but REALLY?

Please, let’s keep some perspective. Could October of 2014 be the beginning of another stock market and economic crash like that of 1929, 1987, or 2008? I suppose so, but I certainly don’t think so.

Because there seems to be an unusual amount of angst over the market volatility of the past four weeks, I thought it was timely to put my thoughts on paper and share them with you.

The S&P 500 extended its recent pullback last Friday (October 17th) to close down for the fourth consecutive week and is now 6.2% off its September 18th record close of 2011.36. This pullback has provided an unwelcomed reminder that stocks do not go up in a straight line Even within powerful bull markets such as the one we have been enjoying since 2009, pullbacks of 5 – 10% have been quite common, and in my opinion do not mean the bull market is nearing an end. Markets typically see four pullbacks of 5% or more in a year and this is the first since January/February of 2014.

January: Frank Patzke, CFP® looks forward at what to expect in 2014

“Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas."

—Paul Samuelson, economist, and Nobel Prize winner

We've just entered the New Year, making it the perfect time to take stock of 2013 and share some thoughts on how I plan to position your portfolio as we continue down the road called 2014.

There is no better place to start than to re-create the atmosphere that greeted investors at the conclusion of 2012. The country had just emerged from a bruising presidential election, and the fiscal cliff loomed large over the economy and the markets.

Without any action by Congress, steep tax increases were scheduled to take effect, threatening to tip the economy into a recession again. At the midnight hour, Congress managed to craft a narrow bill that raised taxes for the wealthiest Americans—about 1%—while enshrining the Bush-era tax cuts as law for the rest of the population.

It wasn't the so-called Grand Bargain that some had dared to hope for.

June 2010: Chicago-Based Financial Advisor Frank T. Patzke CFP® Earns Retirement Management Analyst Designation

Palatine, IL - June 1, 2010 Frank T. Patzke, founder and president of Chicago-based Guidant Wealth Advisors, has just received word that he will earn the Retirement Management Analyst or RMA designation. To earn an RMA designation – which is offered by the Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA) – financial professionals must complete the RIIA’s focused educational and ethics training curriculum and pass a rigorous examination on retirement income planning and management. The RMA program consists of intensive self-study pre-work, two days of in-class training and a three-hour exam. In addition, ongoing education is required to maintain the certification.

“When the bottom dropped out of the economy and our financial markets in 2008, it became clear that traditional retirement planning didn’t work for millions of Americans whose retirement security is at risk,” explains François Gadenne, Chairman and Executive Director of RIIA. “The leadership of RIIA decided to address this need for a more comprehensive approach to retirement income management and developed the education and training framework to help advisors better help their clients. That is how the RMA certification came into being.”

“Our primary focus at Guidant Wealth Advisors is to help ensure that our clients are confident about their retirement security — that they trust we have guided them well. With today’s market volatility and global economic situation in flux, I wanted the most relevant training available to help me respond and better serve our clients,” says Patzke who devoted over forty hours to focused study over a three month period to earning the designation. “I chose to invest myself in the RMA certification because it was the first program I discovered that was academically driven as opposed to product driven.”

“Those advisors and financial professionals who receive the RMA certification are showing that they not only have mastered a challenging curriculum, but that they are dedicated to helping their clients and leading the effort toward creating retirement security for all Americans,” notes Gadenne.

In addition to continually furthering his own training and education, Patzke also shares his knowledge with clients and interested others through periodic workshops on financial and retirement topics.
